For our customers who perform aquatic management of ponds and lakes, or for those who may own lakes or water impoundments, algae can detract from the aesthetics of the pond, the health of the pond, and certain types of algae blooms have been shown to cause health issues in certain immune suppressed people.
A healthy pond will have a robust population of beneficial pond bacteria and organisms that help breakdown dead algae and litter and produce nutrients for the natural ecology of the pond.
Conventional algae control involves the use of various algaecides, most of which contain copper sulfate.
Copper sulfate is an effective and inexpensive compound to control algae, but it is an unsustainable solution to algae management in ponds and has disadvantages. Long term use of copper sulfate-based algaecides can result in a build-up of organic matter in the bottom of a pond that can reduce the depth and capacity of a pond causing diminished stormwater treatment as well as the potential for more algae production or Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) to begin growing. Copper is a heavy metal and can accumulate in the bottom of a pond, further harming the health of the pond’s ecology.
The good news is that there are better ways to control algae in a more sustainable way with no impact on the ecosystem.
The benefits of using Bioril’s various algae control products are as follows:
- Algae is controlled sustainably with no residual chemicals or heavy metals.
- Bioril’s products support the growth of beneficial microbes in the ponds to break down dead algae and to support the natural food chain in the pond necessary for the healthy ecology of the pond.
- Over time, pond capacity is stabilized and possibly increased.
- Use of our products allows the ponds to be used for common area irrigation, which helps conserve higher quality sources of water.
Please note that the particular method of algae control in ponds or lakes is highly dependent on factors such as algae type, source of nutrients feeding the algae, pond pH and alkalinity, pond depth and many other factors. Depending on the size of the pond or number of ponds, a site visit and water sampling program may be required for a successful and cost effective, sustainable algae control program. Please contact Bioril for recommended application rates.
